And from now on we are at Araújo & Sobrinho, surrounded by papers, many papers, pens, pencils, canvases, brushes, in a century-old family tradition building full of character and nobility and who recently gave birth to one of the most elegant themed hotel in town.
We are here as we were “seahorses in the water” …
It is in the historic heart of Porto that is born Porto A.S. 1829 Hotel with the recovery and revitalization of a building of great architectural and heritage value.
Located at Largo de São Domingos, at the end of Rua das Flores, at the time considered the main artery of trade in the old town Porto, it started as “Armazém de Papel ao Murinho de S. Domingosl” and became one of the most important and reputable stationers in the country and one of the oldest in Europe, appearing in the same family for five generations.
Araújo & Sobrinho starts its activity with the sale of paper and several fine art articles imported from England, but quickly evolves into letterpress, bookbinding and carpentry. This evolution culminates with the conquest of exclusive representations of major international brands, namely writing and other office equipment machines.
On display, some furniture collection of pieces and objects belonging to the estate of almost 200 years of stationery, now dignified, valued and eternalized in this themed hotel. As this business main customers were from England, so the products sold were.
Within the portfolio of the most appreciated products by customers and even the founder were dried seahorses, and the European ancients believed that the seahorse carried the souls of the dead sailors to the underworld giving them safe passage and protected the fate of his soul, which later became the symbol of the stationery and now it is of the hotel.
