Mercado do Bom Sucesso is, together with Mercado do Bolhão, one of the most important local markets of fresh in the city. The market is located in the parish of Massarelos, accessible by Bom Sucesso Square or Largo Ferreira Lapa.
Following the construction of the Municipal Market of Matosinhos, the Porto City Council hired the company ARS Architects, Architects Fortunato Cabral, Cunha Leão and Morais Soares, to design a new municipal market for the city. The building was designed in 1949, the works began in 1951 and the inauguration took place the following year. The new building would be marked by a modern architectural design, with reinforced concrete structure and an innovative vaulted roof torn by large windows, allowing a good natural lighting throughout the space.
The building was designed with three floors, in order to take advantage of the natural slope of the area, and its periphery occupied by independent stores. Another feature of the original building was the zonal separation market, standing at the fish market at a lower level in order to allow better aeration. On the first floor was located also a gallery (which largely survives after completed renovations in 2013) that surrounded the entire market and giving access to independent shops such as butchers and bakeries.
The market has recently been rehabilitated, presenting now with a new more appropriate concept to the requirements of the XXI century. This space has a varied gastronomy area, who lives daily with the fresh market. Two spaces, so you can buy various fresh products, or taste snacks and drinks, and showcase the best of Portuguese and foreign cuisine.
In 2014 the market building won the National Prize for Urban Rehabilitation and was one of the winners of the Global Awards for Excellence, New York.
