D. Pedro IV litteraly gave his heart to the city of Porto having lived in the Invicta during the months of the Siege of Porto (between July 1832 and August 1833) by virtue of having received from the city’s population, their support, their effort and heroic endurance facing the absolutist forces of D. Miguel.
After the death of D. Pedro in September 1834, his wife, D. Amélia, has placed his heart in a casket with two lids and handed it to the king’s aide that took him from Lisbon to Porto on a ship. The heart came to Porto in February 1835, almost five months after the death of the monarch, which went in procession from Ribeira to the Venerable Brotherhood of Our Lady of Lapa in the middle of a crowd, where it remains to this day.
The enrolment in Portuguese refers to a proclamation by Pedro IV to the people from Porto during his visit to the Invicta in 1834:
“… I congratulate myself to see in the theater of my glory, in the midst of my ‘Portuenses’ friends, those whom I, for the aid they gave me during the memorable site, the name I acquired, and honored, I leave as an inheritance to my children. My heart will stay in Porto. ‘
