The tower was for many years a reference for navigation, almost as a guide to conduct the navigators at the entrance of the Douro bar.
It also contributed to help traders know when the steam boat of the royal case arrived to the Douro river, a vessel that brought the London money and bills of exchange to pay for goods that were exported to England.
“When the steam boat of the royal case was about to enter the Douro, the Commercial Association made up balloons to the top of the Torre dos Clérigos. This way marketers knew they could send their employees close to the post office in order to receive as soon as possible the money coming from London” says Germano Silva.
